Fall is finally here!

Today being the first Sunday of the NFL regular season means that fall has officially arrived.  To commemorate we cracked open a very special brew, the first ever Double Hump all grain recipe of our Oktoberfest beer.  With Pilsner, Munich and Vienna malts with a mix of Hallertauer and Tettnanger hops this is a very traditional marzen beer (not those extra hopped American versions of Oktoberfest).  It came out at about 5% alcohol and was very tasty.  The picture below is of this wonderful beer with a picture of the Berlin Cathedral Church that I took while in Germany this summer (to my severe disappointment I did not make it to Bavaria where Oktoberfest was invented, but had to drown my sorrows in the beers of 5 other German cities).

  1. Appearance: Dark orange to brown in color a little cloudy with a thick off-white head.

Nose: Bread-like smell with a hint of toasted malt.

Palate: mild hop bitterness that quickly becomes a toasted flavor that lingers slightly.

Mouthfeel: a proper amount of carbonation but becomes thin too quickly

Overall: tried back to back with a couple German marzen beers and I have to say it is true to the traditions of the style.

  2. Tried this today! Used a more tapered glass as opposed to the pint style glass that gets wider as it goes up and poured it so some head formed but no more than an inch or so. This worked well as the beer wasn't "spent" before drinking by foaming all over the place and I think the flavor profile is hitting its stride since we tried the "dregs" bottle some weeks ago. Definitely not as hoppy as the American versions seem to be getting. It is smooth, slightly creamy and just a touch smokey but with a little bit of prickling on the roof of the mouth remniscent of the crispness of a lager. A nice seasonal in between of the bright, light summer brews and the dead of winter dark, thick comfort suds. In short, a great way to say goodbye to the summer and welcome the incoming cooler months of the closing of the year!

  3. The best one yet from this brewery. Good flavor from start to finish. There was not one overwhelming ingredient. This beer was smooth with a hint of spice to remind us of the upcoming season.
